B7.1.3.1.3 Demonstrate ability to apply the design process to create artefacts that solve specific problems in the local community.
Last term, we had an introductory level to the design process, and what it entails. We took sometime explaining all of the stages involved with class demonstrations and contributions from you as a learner. Today we continue with the knowledge we gained from last term to create artefacts that will solve specific problems in our community.
The design process is a series of steps that help you plan, develop, and refine creative ideas to solve problems or create something new. At each point, remember that whatever artefact you will be working on, must follow the design process.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN MAKING HANDMADE DESIGNS AND ITEMS
- The purpose of the item; after the designer learns what the item he/she intends to create will be used for, this will inform them on what tools and materials specifically they can employ.
Design
- The design should be creative, functional, and visually appealing.
- Ensure the design meets the purpose or need of the item.
- Consider simplicity or complexity based on your skill level and tools available.
Shape and Form of the Items
- Choose a shape and form that suits the item's purpose.
- The proportions should be balanced and aesthetically pleasing.
- Ensure the form is practical for its intended use (e.g., a vase should be stable).
Nature and Suitability of the Materials to Be Used
- Select materials that are durable and appropriate for the item being made.
- Consider the texture, flexibility, and weight of the materials.
- Use materials that are safe and easy to work with, especially for beginners.
The Occasion on Which the Item Will Be Used
- Tailor the design to fit the purpose of the occasion (e.g., a festive design for Christmas).
- Consider cultural or traditional symbols relevant to the event.
- Ensure the item matches the theme or tone of the occasion.
Diligence, Patience, and Tolerance
- Be focused and attentive to detail during the crafting process.
- Practice patience, as handmade work can be time-consuming and requires care.
- Stay tolerant of mistakes and setbacks, and be willing to learn and improve.
